Post My PGM and my tinny tone!
Hello all,

Last year i bought a brand new PGM301 which is a fantastic guitar but im having problems getting the right tone out of my rig. I have quite simply a PGM301 and a line 6 Pod X3.

If I use the bridge pickup my tone sounds very tinny or "canny" :( so i usually stick to the neck pickup. Im currently learning technical difficulties and its driving me crazy trying to get a half decent tone for the song.

I have fiddled with my pod plenty but im flying blind really, i dont know how to create a decent tone. Im not sure if i need a better bridge pickup, or some advice on tone shapeing etc.

Any pointers much appreciated!

matt

Your tone predominantly comes from your amp and your fingers, do you have a budget?

I have a POD X3 and a 301 and I get some amazing, awesome sounds out of it.

Theres nothing at all wrong with the PAF Pro, its a great pup. Beauty is in the ear of the beholder, but even if its not to your personal taste its certaintly not a "bad" pup, and definately not "tinny"

I find the POD tends to colour the guitars natural tone so much that theres very little difference between neck and bridge pups (on high gain anyway) so if the neck sounds good and the bridge is really different you may have a wiring problem.

A) How are you listening to the tone? Into an amp, through headphone, into your pc etc.?

B) Make sure you have the Output set properly. Studio direct, and if youre going into and amp, make sure you have that selected ie. combo, stack etc.

C) Make sure your setting has a cab selected.

D) Use a preset. The Cliffs of Dover one under Songs is a good tester. It doesnt sound anything like the song, but it has quite a decent, thick tone to it.

If it still sounds like poo check the pickup wiring, and try using a different guitar using the same POD patch and see what difference there is.

Heres a good modern PG one. Its got a touch too much distortion maybe, but I like it.

Amp: Brit J-800
Cab: Celest V30
Mic: On Axis
B 65% - M 67% - T 65% - P 60% - D 43%
Stomp: Screamer - D 30% - G 52% - T 100%
Mod: Sine Chorus - Speed 0.80hz - Mix 31% - Depth 72% - Bass 44% - Treble 62% - Post config
Delay: Stereo Delay - Time 350ms - mix 26% - LFDBK 31%- RFDBK 40% - Offset 35% - post config
Reverb: Lux Spring - D 51% - T 50% - mix 30% - post config
Parametric EQ: Lo gain -4.6dB - Low fq 50 - High gain +2.0dB - Hi fq 6.6k

Thats pretty much it. I like it a lot. Good luck.

I have the same rig...

PD XT Live + 301.

And rock the hell out of it.

You have to try new tones, or go to www.customtones.com to download some cool ones that can help a lot.

Eh, I can't stand the PAF Pro, especially in the bridge position because to my ear is does sound tinny as in it lacks body (midrange) and oomph (low end) which is why I replaced them in both of my 301s with Tone Zones.

If your tone isn't right coming out of the guitar, it's an uphill battle from there.

Don't forget, PG uses a lot of different bridge pickups including the PAF Pro, the Tone Zone, Super Distortion, Air Classic and a few more I can't remember now.

Ive got a tonezone in the bridge and it kills. Its so much better than the PAF pro (in my opinion). I only use the neck when doing alot of stringskipping. Never on speedpicking

Never tried the Tone Zone in the Bridge

However i love the Paf pro in both positions

the TZ is a great pickup but there is no reason for your paf pro to be tinny, its not a tinny pickup.
I think they are wired in parallel in the PGM301 and that does sounds a lot different to them being wired in series.

It may vary from guitar to guitar. My 200 has 3 PAF pro's and is kind of thin sounding. My 300 sounds great with PAF pros though.

many thanks for taking the time to share these settings :)

I have spent some more time playing around with my setup but my bridge PAF just does not sound good at all. I still feel it is tinny and lacking in something. I have decided to try a Tone Zone in the bridge as everyone seems to think it a great pickup! does anyone know the exact model i need for a 2008 PGM301 ?

thanks again guys

The model number of the Tone Zone is DP155. Just make sure it's F-spaced. --Jason

Edit under Amp, rather than use the knobs on the X3.
