Post Metallica played in the UK- but no Lars!
Hi,

METALLICA's official web site, MetOnTour.com, has issued a statement confirming reports that drummer Lars Ulrich was absent from the group's gig at the Download festival earlier tonight. It reads as follows:

"Yes, the rumours are true, Lars was not present at the Download Festival. Joey Jordison from SLIPKNOT and Dave Lombardo from SLAYER stepped up to the plate and helped out, more info and details to follow..."

According to various people that attended the show, METALLICA played 11 tracks, with Jordison (complete with his SLIPKNOT mask) sitting behind the kit for most of them (photos). The set list for the concert is believed to have been the following:

01. Battery (w/ Lombardo)
02. The Four Horsemen (w/ Lombardo)
03. For Whom The Bell Tolls (w/ Jordison)
04. Creeping Death (w/ Jordison)
05. Seek And Destroy (w/ Jordison)
06. Fade To Black (w/ Lars' drum tech Flemming Larsen)
07. Wherever I May Roam (w/ Jordison)
08. Last Caress (w/ Jordison)
09. Sad But True (w/ Jordison)
10. Nothing Else Matters (w/ Jordison)
11. Enter Sandman (w/ Jordison)

(Taken from the GUitarist UK forums)

Pretty wierd.

ROFL... drummer from Slipknot complete with mask.

The Metallica merge into trendiness must be becoming more apparent.

"Next week, with guest singer Fred Durst and guest guitarist Jerry Horton."

I wonder if the pressure of the St.Anger debacle is finally caving them in.

I guess even Lars got sick of praising St. Anger.

In all seriousness, I may make fun of them, but I don't wish ill-will on the guy. Hope everything turns out all right.

The Megadeth board guys mentioned hearing he picked up some kind of disease or illness in Europe. Nothing official of course, so I wouldnt put a stamp on it.

Personally i dont give a shit about St anger or what they're like now. Some people still like their music some dont...whether they've gone 'trendie' or not now is irrelivent(sp?). They're old music was alright but im not the greatest fan of them. I guess sometimes bands get sick of playing the same shit for 20 years and want to do something different...even if it does get them more recognition....whats wrong with that?

Hi,
The latest:

In a video message on www.metallica.com, Lars explained his lack of appearance at the Download.

"We've been going pretty hard for most of the year, as you are aware, and we had to take a little bit of a chill-out time back there in October, as some of our Latin American friends might remember. It kind of caught up with me the other day, and I had to just kind of chill out," he explains.

"There's no reason to bore anybody with a lot of details. But I'm fine, as you can see, and I'm looking forward to playing tonight. I had a little episode on the airplane going to Donington the other day, and I thought that it would be best to get it checked out 'cause I was having a bit of a weird half hour there. I think that the last six months of playing super-duty metal and traveling all over the world at my age kind of caught up to me a little bit."

Lars went on to say, "But I wanna thank, obviously, all the fans at Donington for being so supportive. And I wanna thank... From what I heard from James and Kirk and Rob, it went well. And I wanna thank, obviously, Joey from Slipknot for stepping up, and Dave from Slayer... God, I wish I could have seen that. No, on the second thought, it's probably better that I don't see it. But that's pretty cool that Joey and Dave, and of course, Flemming, my trusted companion and drum roadie for coming up on 20 years this year, (stepped up). So I appreciate the three of those guys (filling in), I appreciate my 50,000 friends in England for being supportive and understanding."

Lars goes on to admit that, "This is the first Metallica show I've ever missed, so I still have the best track record. But sometimes you've gotta do what you've gotta do. So I apologize to all our friends, once again, who traveled and... We've had an awesome run in England, between Reading and Leeds and the secret Donington show and the couple of nights at Earls Court, so I'm sorry that I missed it. But I'm back here in Ludwigshafen and we're gonna just keep going 'till we fall over. I appreciate all the love and the support and all you fucking haters out there, I know who you are and I know where you live and I'm gonna come find you... Nah, it's all good."

Didnt they tour for a year and a half on the back of the black album? They have a private jet and stay in top hotels, its not like they live on the bus!

Anyway, its good news that he is okay, im not the fan i once was but i still respect the guy.

Mark

On one of the Sirius "radio" stations, the deejay said he shit his pants. He was joking, but it would be funny if it was true.
