Post What are some good, new bands/artists to listen to?
Growing up during the 80's and early 90's, there was a plethora of great music to listen to. People actually played guitar solos! (Imagine that).

Well, as most of us know, the late 90's until now haven't been kind to popular rock music. You can thank MTV for that, but that's a whole other thread. Most of what you can hear on radio now has no soul to it. So as it's been, I don't really listen to much new stuff except from the bands/artists I continue to listen too and any side projects they might do. Occasionally I find a jem that I like (Symphony X).

As I've been reading this board for the last couple weeks, I've seen a few bands names come up, but am reluctant to buy cd's as I don't want to get stuck with a dud.

So, I'm looking for suggestions on new listening experiences? I tend to progressive rock, but like regular rock, metal, jazz-fusion, classical and even some new age.

Here's and small idea of what I like to listen to:
Vai
Satriani
Gilbert/Mr. Big/Racer X
Rush
Anthrax
Alice in Chains
Black Label Society
Dream Theater
Zappa
Kings X
Extreme
Ozzy
SRV

I just heard the Velvet Revolver single "Slither" today. Best recent song I've heard for a good while. Nice solo too!

I don't know a bunch about them besides there's some ex-GNR bandmates in it, or at least Slash. Also Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland does the vocals. You can hear the whole "Slither" song at their site (www.velvetrevolver.net). CD doesn't come out for few months though. Sure got me interested quick though!

Edit: Slightly wrong url, sorry.

Hey, Chainsaw

Try:

ARK - Burn the Sun
Vanden Plas - Beyond Daylight

and while you're at it, here's a couple low bandwidth mp3s you might like:

Check out Shadows Fall, new band with guitar players that can actually play guitar. Not so much the shred variety, but I also like Lacuna Coil.

A kind of a throw back to the 80's style is The Brides of Destruction. I love it. Lynch/Pilson came out with a pretty good CD last year too.

I've been listening to so much old stuff lately it's hard to come up with some others, but I'll keep thinking.

Holy Crap! Please for the love of great music check out "Masterplan" Jorn Lande is simply the best vocalist to appear in the last decade. A friend of mine ran a e-zine poll of metal heads and he was on top naturally. I'll tell you this... when you pick up either Ark or Masterplan you will be hooked and WILL SEEK OUT EVERY SINGLE VOCAL NOTE HE HAS RECORDED!!!

Trust me, this happens to all Jorn Lande fans. The fore mentioned Iced Earth is good as Ripper (Judas Priest) is on vocals...but...

hot damn, Get "Masterplan"! or get "Ark". It doesn't matter as you'll soon be scouring music stores and the internet to get it all anyway.

One other to get is "Freak Kitchen". THIS is the best power trio you've yet to hear. Mattias does stuff on guitar nobody else does. Get their last one "Move" from 2002!!!

Do it! Spend the $15 and change your life. I am not wrong!!!

is a truly AWESOME prog metal band! But get Masterplan first. Holy crap just thinking of this CD makes me dig out my ipod for a lunchtime listen.

I can hook you up with some of the harder to find Jorn releases once you're an addict.
