Post Re: MIKE PORTNOY LEAVES DREAM THEATER
I'm not a fan of Dream Theater, but I believe anyone who goes to see Dream Theater does so with a psychological implant that the two cats behind it all are Portnoy and Petrucci, with Rudess slightly behind and La Brie and Myung just being (albeit very talented) bores in the background. Portnoy will be a loss on so many fronts. Replace him with Lang or any other cat... just won't be the same.

Imagine Racer X doing a record and tour with Yngwie on guitar.

*shudder*

Wouldn't happen. Not enough room in the tourbus.

Yngwie would change up the Starbucks budget to be a donut budget

As far as I remember, the DT Starbucks budget for recording the last album was 20.000$

Doesn't anyone think that the rest of the band's decision was selfish?

Not in the least. Mike does all of these side projects and burns himself out and wants to take a break from Dream Theater.
So the others should put their lives on hold for him? To me this is the musical equivalent of coming home to your wife and telling her that you are too tired to have sex because your mistresses have worn you out.

I saw this on his wiki:

Tribute Shows (CD and DVD)

* One Night in New York City - Yellow Matter Custard (2003) (The Beatles) with Paul Gilbert, Neal Morse and Matt Bissonette
* Two Nights In North America - Hammer of the Gods (2006) (Led Zeppelin) with Paul Gilbert, Daniel Gildenlöw, and Dave LaRue
* One Night in Chicago - Cygnus and the Sea Monsters (2006) (Rush) with Paul Gilbert, Sean Malone, and Jason McMaster
* One Night in New York City - Amazing Journey (2007) (The Who) with Paul Gilbert, Billy Sheehan and Gary Cherone

I never knew of the latter three CDs!

Whatever. I still have Circus Maximus, Pagan's Mind and An Endless Sporadic, as progressive metal bands to listen to...

But really sad news :( I love their older stuff, so i'm really sad we're not hearing any drumming from that guy in DT for a while...

But those who said noone could replace him.. Listen to An Endless Sporadic... Their drumming is AMAZING. I'm sure Andy Gentile would fit the job :D

How much you can rock your socks and have charisma while playing. Have you seen Dream Theater live? I saw them this year and it would've sucked if it wasn't for Mike!

You mean like, Neil leaving Rush?
He'd be a great replacement, but I don't see that happening.
Talk about creating a legacy.
