I've never had a problem with his technique, more his melodies. That intro solo in One is exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about. It sounds like something that I'd come up with!

But if we are on a slating bandwagon, then I have to post this.

You know when you listen to Rush and think "How come 3 guys can sound so huge?"

That's just like Kirk there, btu it's like "How come 1 guy can sound like 10 bad guitar players at the same time?"

Yeah... it was pretty fucking horrible... I have to agree on that one.

One thing to criticize Beach though:
Have you guys noticed he is tapping 75% of his solos?
Luckily, his tapping sound like really smooth legatos so I like to hear him play. Too bad that on stage though you can see him tapping all the time which is kind of less "Rock n roll"... visually anyway.

And 0% of them use a wah wah pedal with such panache!!!!!!!

Seriously though, whilst he might not have the greatest technique known to mankind, go into a guitar store and half of the time you will hear someone playing a Hammet solo - there are not too many guitarist that can claim that kind of fame (if any). For that, whether you think his technique sucks or not, he's a memorable guitarist for the uninformed and has often been a precursor for fantastic players. The reality is that James is Metallica, the reason they are good is the rhythm playing, not the leads.....

As for Reb Beach saying that Hammet sucks, I say dude put your dick away, art like music is personal interpretation - Hammet might suck to you, but the fact remains he's had a lot more success and fame than you. The reality is he sounds like a douche - a simple "I'm not a fan" would have done the trick......

99% of those couldn't write a riff like him though. :) And I agree, his vibrato is so horrible you can't even make up for it. We've been through this before though, and I've realized that discussing Kirk on a Paul Gilbert-forum is like mentioning Islam in a Jewish forum, it's all bashing and senseless shit, and nothing good ever comes out of it, so might we just leave it here? :) We all know that Kirk sucks.

I had never listened to Kirk live.

After investigation: I agree he sucks live.

However, what he put on records is just awesome, I have no idea why you guys deny he has some talent. Saying he only did it because his manager and bandmades were guiding him is ridiculous, because that assertion is true in every rock band.

And to comment on what AussiePGFan said, I'd say actually James + Lars = Metallica, I haven't heard anyone play drums like Lars.

Kirk still played a very important role in Metallica to me.
That's all I have to say.

^^well I think he fits the band really good. I couldn't imagine Metallica with someone else. With a super precise and clean technique lead guitarist it just wouldn't be the same.

The only problem to me is that there are so many people thinking he is "god" or a "virtuoso" while his playing has many flaws.

I dunno man... Lars' style of playing is pretty boring to me. I'm not running Metallica down. But seriously! After listening to bands like Dream Theater & Megadeth, it's really really hard to get back to Metallica. (Ok, maybe just Cliff Burton's works).

No way.
I've listened to both Dream Theatre and Megadeth and I have no doubt Lars is awesome. He can't go really fast... but his drum grooves are really cool non the less.

I think Kirk is a bad guitar player, but he gets to plays some cool shit (and in a formerly cool band). I was amused with Hammett as a teenager, and I give him credit for that.

Not too many guitar players have influenced so many young people to pick up a guitar.

And well, he has tens of millions of dollars being a "shitty" player, so he gets DOUBLE credit for that.

WIN.

Same apply with Lars. I think he is a limited drum player (live he is painful to listen at), but he has earned tens of millions, played all over the world and influenced thousands.

Another WIN.

Sometimes, you have to leave out the personal considerations and look at the "facts".

Before Metallica, Kirk Hammett was in Exodus. He played on their 1982 Demo.

Who all here has heard Exodus's 1982 Demo?

Also, a huge proportion of the people who put down Winger couldn't sing or play an instrument to save their own lives.
